New Teen Books for May, 2011

The Year We Were Famous by Carole Estby Dagg
Teen Historical Fiction

With their family home facing foreclosure, seventeen year-old Clara Estby and her mother, Helga, need to raise a lot of money fast--no easy feat for two women in 1896. Helga wants to tackle the problem with her usual loud and flashy style, while Clara favors a less showy approach. Together they come up with a plan to walk the 4,600 miles from Mica Creek, Washington, to New York City--and if they can do it in only seven months, a publisher has agreed to give them $10,000.

Based on the true story of the author's great-aunt and great-grandmother, this is a fast paced historical adventure that sets the dram of "Around the World in Eighty Days" against an American backdrop during the time of the suffragist movement, the 1896 presidential campaign, and the changing perception of "a woman's place" in society.

Teen Tech Week Wrap Up

Thanks to the lovely teens of Gwinnett County, our Teen Tech Week this year was a smash. 230 of you guys came out for programs like Kinect gaming, word cloud art, and techno crafting. Check out this awesome video that our Norcross teens and staff created using animoto.com:

Oh, and wondering who won our Tweeting Contest? Well, that honor (and a new Zen MP3 player!) went to Lawrence, who tweeted "I think the coolest piece of technology is the Xbox 360 Kinect." We really couldn't agree more--we love doing teen programs with our Kinect. Congrats to Lawrence! So what's next? Well, we have a brand new and very exciting program coming up April 16th at the Aurora Theatre in downtown Lawrenceville--the Teen Summit. It's a totally free day of hands-on workshops about all the important issues YOU want to explore. You'll learn some relaxing yoga moves, get help budgeting all your moolah, develop self-defense skills, get tips on going green, and lots more. Check out www.gwinnettpl.org/teensummit for all the info and definitely plan to be there!
